“There were moments when he looked on evil simply as a mode through which he could realize his conception of the beautiful.”

– Oscar Wilde, the picture of Dorian Gray

Winter 2012 is the first of a fashion triptych inspired by Oscar Wilde’s ‘Picture of Dorian Grey’ published in 1890.
This first of three collections features a woman so focused on her own beauty she will do anything to not lose it, nor will she accept anyone being more attractive than she is.
A lone wolf, living a hedonistic life driven by ego, she takes down every woman who threatens her position.

It is assumed modern day medicine will soon be able to erase all signs of aging, perhaps even turn back time, but scientists are focusing on the exterior, neglecting the unavoidable patination of the soul. What happens when the soul darkens like a Midwestern sky before a storm? On the outside one still looks like the perfect paper perfection of a magazine cover, but the obvious difference between an 18 year old and a 60 year old is experience; a half decade worth of memories, love, envy and insecurities.

Winter 2012 portrays the woman as hunter, the ‘Alpha Diva’, the fabrics refer to midnight, the fur of a wolf, the color of blood, desaturated colors as seen by moonlight; strong contrast between the soft lucid silks, earthy fabrics like linen and the harsh modern high-tech fabric used to obtain a silhouette that is feminine yet aggressive.
The exaggerated waist, hips and upper back serve to accentuate the silhouette to emphasize both the physical and the mental strength of this female predator.

As dawn breaks, sunlight is captured by the mist, slowly revealing the bright summer colors of morning daylight.
Schipper/Arques ss2011 is about the volume of light, about a girl running away from the restrictive environment in her family at the night of her debutante ball, ending up feeling liberated but overwhelmed and frightened out in a city at night filled with fog.
